2010 Ford Edge Review

Basically competitive, though lacking a real edge.

Sales of Ford's classic SUVs may be tanking, but the Edge is a safe bet as to where many of its would-be owners are ending up. As Ford's first mid-size, car-based SUV, the wildly popular Edge makes a more efficient, pleasant, and better-looking package than the old school Explorer could ever hope to be.

Using the same basic architecture as the Mazda 6/Ford Fusion, the Edge differs from its source with a 265-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and a different transmission. Performance is as strong as any in its class, with either front- or all-wheel-drive. While not as agile as the Fusion, handling is still secure and the ride is quite smooth. Still, the Edge could use help in few areas, namely the long braking distances, the rough-feeling engine, and the indecisive transmission.

More refinement would also help inside, where the Edge houses a cheap-looking dashboard and instrumentation. The back seat needs a better cushion to seat adults, and the common option of a third-row seat is noticeably absent. On the other hand, passenger and cargo space are very good, and the Edge can be ordered with gizmos like Microsoft Sync, plus one of the biggest moonroofs known to man. The Edge is also loaded with safety features, including a stability control system that can help prevent both spin-outs and rollovers.

The Edge would get a stronger endorsement if Ford would address its numerous flaws, but at least it's proving to be reliable, and Ford's modest pricing puts it a couple thousand under the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. For many people, that seems to be enough.
